Running to Change Lives

(Chicago, IL)  On October 9th, 65 youth and 54 mentors gathered in Chicago’s Grant Park for the 34th Annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon.  They had spent the last 6 months together; training, sweating, and developing life-changing relationships.  Their hard work and dedication to each other paid off.  As the last Team M3 youth and mentor crossed the finished line, the whole team was there to cheer them on.

This year’s evaluation data has shown us that not only did youth complete the marathon, but lives have been changed.  MENTOR, the nation’s leading mentor coalition, recommends that a quality mentoring program should require approximately 60 hours of mentoring per year in order to foster a successful mentoring relationship.  In 2011, each Team M3 mentor logged over 200 hours of mentoring during the season!  100% of students, after completing the program, rated themselves as being very healthy and physically fit. 96% of the students indicated that they could accomplish anything they set their minds to.  95% of youth are taking on additional leadership opportunities in their schools. 100% of youth reported not being involved in any violent altercation during the training season and no students were arrested during this time period. 60% of youth that originally reported being associated with gangs now report having cut off all ties with gang members.

What a success!  The MGR Foundation couldn’t be prouder of this year’s mentors and youth.  Your dedication is amazing.

“Before Team m3, Eli was my little girl, I saw her that way and I did things for her. After Team M3 she’s a young woman. I’ve seen her grow so much, not just in running, in her academics too. Before I was always saying do your homework, now she does it on her own. She’s tasted success. Programs like this help us (parents) to get our kids to a certain point where they can fly. Team M3 did that for Eli”.
John, Eli’s father and Team M3 mentor
