WillPower is a collaboration between the MGR Foundation and the Lookingglass Theatre Company. WillPower engages students in positive modeling behavior through peer theatre, coupled with sexual education and parental involvement. We present a series of interactive improvisational mini-plays whereby negative sexual behavior is demonstrated and positive behavior is then modeled by program participants. This is supported with factual information and discussion that is reinforced through our after-school activities.

The plays are presented by a teen-ensemble comprised of upperclassmen. The program has 4 basic components: a teen ensemble, program facilitators, a program evaluator and community educators. The after-school component of the program will take place once a week, approximately 1 hours each session, and includes interactive group discussions, role playing, information and referrals. This will be accomplished with the full collaboration of Lookingglass Theatre and our education partner Planned Parenthood of Chicago.

At the completion of this program, youth will:

  • State accurate information about teen pregnancy, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections, including means of prevention, transmission, and current community impact.
  • Believe in the value of safer sex, including abstinence and delaying sexual intercourse
  • Have confidence in their ability to negotiate sexual situations and take pride in choosing responsible sexual behaviors
  • Reduce sexual risk behaviors
  • Demonstrate refusal skills, assertive communication, problem-solving, and risk reduction.
